# Riftri Lightweight Git workspaces for parallel development. Riftri is an opt-in copy-on-write storage accelerator for real Git linked worktrees. Developers and coding agents can work on separate branches without eagerly storing another full physical copy of every unchanged project file. Keep important work committed or backed up. Starring is optional and never required to install or use Riftri. ## Installation Git must be installed. The standalone native CLI does not require Node.js, npm, or a Rust toolchain. ### macOS and Linux ```sh curl -fsSL https://riftri.dev/install.sh | bash ``` The installer selects the matching release asset, verifies SHA-256 and the binary version, and installs to `~/.local/bin`. Follow its printed PATH command. It does not use sudo, edit shell profiles, or activate Git interception. You can [read the Bash installer](https://riftri.dev/install.sh) before running it. ### Windows PowerShell ```powershell $Installer = Join-Path $env:TEMP 'riftri-install.ps1' Invoke-WebRequest https://riftri.dev/install.ps1 -OutFile $Installer Get-Content $Installer # Run after reviewing the script: & $Installer ``` The PowerShell installer verifies the matching x64 or ARM64 executable and installs it in a per-user directory. It does not edit profiles or persistent PATH. Optimized Windows worktrees require ReFS, even if the CLI is installed on NTFS. SHA-256 checks are not a separate signature or notarization guarantee. ## Quick start From an existing Git repository, check the proposed destination: ```sh riftri doctor --destination ../app-auth ``` Doctor is read-only: it reports support and blockers without creating a worktree. If the repository and destination are supported, create a worktree: ```sh riftri worktree add ../app-auth -b feature/auth main cd ../app-auth git status ``` Replace `main` with your starting revision if needed. To use an existing local branch, run `riftri worktree add ../app-auth feature/auth` instead. Git retains its normal branch-safety rules. Files changed in one worktree stay private to it. ## Use normal Git commands The explicit `riftri worktree add` interface works without activating a shim. For an agent or command tree, enable the repository and opt into process-scoped interception: ```sh riftri enable riftri exec -- claude ``` Replace `claude` with your agent or another command. Inside that process and its children, supported `git worktree` operations use Riftri. Normal Git commands and commands in repositories that are not enabled go to the real Git executable. For a current Bash session, explicitly evaluate the shell hook: ```sh eval "$(riftri shell hook bash)" riftri enable git worktree add -b feature/auth ../app-auth main ``` Use `zsh` or `sh` instead of `bash` for those shells. PowerShell also has an explicitly evaluated hook. Shell activation and repository consent are separate: the shim being on PATH does not enable every repository. ```sh riftri shell status riftri disable eval "$(riftri shell deactivate bash)" ``` `disable` opts the repository out; evaluating `shell deactivate` removes the shim from the current shell. Neither deletes worktrees. The installed Git executable resolves the requested revision and exact tree. 2. Riftri validates the checkout configuration and destination filesystem. 3. Git registers a real linked worktree with its normal checkout suppressed. 4. Riftri finds or prepares an immutable base for that exact tree. 5. The native filesystem creates a copy-on-write view, or an OverlayFS view with a private writable upper layer. 6. Riftri restores the Git pointer, initializes the worktree index, verifies that Git reports a clean checkout, and records the active operation. ```text Git tree + checkout profile + repository + volume | immutable base / | \ worktree worktree worktree auth tests billing private changes in each view ``` Bases are keyed by repository identity, exact tree, checkout profile, and volume. A mutable working directory is never a shared base. Native clones share unchanged blocks; edits allocate private storage. OverlayFS shares a lower tree and copies files into its private upper layer when needed. Riftri participates in setup and cleanup, not ordinary reads and writes. There is no always-on daemon or filesystem proxy. Git owns branches, commits, checkout, merge, rebase, fetching, and pushing. Riftri does not manage pull requests or replace Git's metadata. The Rust implementation separates CLI rendering (`riftri-cli`), orchestration and policy (`riftri-core`), installed-Git communication (`riftri-git`), and native backends (`riftri-storage`). Multi-step mutations use atomic journals so interrupted operations can be inspected and repaired. ## Supported filesystems | Platform | Backend | Requirement | | --- | --- | --- | | macOS | APFS clones | Writable, supported APFS destination | | Linux | Native reflinks | Btrfs or reflink-enabled XFS; active cloning probe succeeds | | Linux | OverlayFS | Caller-visible mount-capable namespace or explicitly installed helper | | Windows | ReFS block clones | Supported ReFS destination; cloning and isolation probes succeed | Installing the CLI does not make an unsupported filesystem compatible. Riftri never silently falls back to a full-copy checkout. Use ordinary Git explicitly when a destination or checkout profile is unsupported. Deterministic in-tree text, line-ending, and binary attributes are supported, along with an allowlist of checkout-neutral GitHub linguist hints. Canonical Git LFS paths need verified objects already present in the default local LFS store; Riftri does not fetch them during creation. Custom filters, custom LFS storage or pointer extensions, external attributes, sparse checkout, and submodules remain outside the supported checkout profile. See the backend and compatibility guides below for exact requirements. ## Worktree lifecycle | Command | Purpose | | --- | --- | | `riftri worktree list` | List active Riftri-managed worktrees | | `riftri worktree list --json` | Read the versioned managed inventory for automation | | `git worktree list` | List all Git worktrees, including unmanaged ones | | `riftri status` | Inspect bases, allocation, and lifecycle state | | `riftri repair` | Recover supported interrupted operations conservatively | | `riftri worktree remove ../app-auth` | Remove a clean managed worktree | | `riftri worktree move ../app-auth ../app-auth-moved` | Move a supported managed view | | `riftri worktree prune` | Prune with managed-state safety checks | | `riftri worktree compact ../app-auth` | Re-clone a pristine native-COW view while preserving Git registration and HEAD | | `riftri gc` | Preview unused-base collection | | `riftri gc --apply` | Explicitly collect eligible unused bases | Clean removal is the default. Forced removal is explicitly destructive and records an exact content snapshot; later changes stop deletion and recovery. Compaction rejects tracked changes and untracked or ignored entries. Active OverlayFS views do not support compaction or mounted moves. Creation, removal, move, prune, compaction, and collection use recoverable journals. Repair preserves changed work rather than treating unknown state as disposable. Do not manually delete state directories as a cleanup shortcut. Automation can use `--json-errors` for versioned failure receipts. ## Disk savings The website chart uses a local assistant-ui source experiment: ten worktrees, 5,346 tracked files each, macOS ARM64, APFS, Riftri v0.1.1, on 2026-09-12. | Measurement | Ordinary Git | Riftri | | --- | --- | --- | | New volume allocation | 774.01 MiB | 100.62 MiB | | Creation time | 9.90 s | 22.44 s | Riftri used 87.0% less new allocation (673.39 MiB saved), including the shared base and all ten views. Creation was slower in this run. The fixture removed the `linguist-generated` display hint; dependencies and full builds were excluded. Allocation was measured at the volume level. These are APFS results, not Linux or Windows measurements, and results vary by workload and filesystem.
